The Disciple Maker Index Survey Opens this Week!

Our parish is on a journey to know, love, and serve Christ as a parish community. Together, we must embrace Christ’s vision for missionary discipleship so our parish can thrive and be a place for others to grow together in faith.

The very first step in this process involves assessing our greatest strengths and opportunities, and that is where the Disciple Maker Index (DMI) comes in! The DMI is an important survey tool that invites you to reflect on your discipleship journey here at Holy Apostles.

The 10–15-minute survey can be accessed through an online link from February 18, 2026, to March 31, 2026 and will ask you to reflect on your own spiritual growth and enable you to provide your perspective on our parish’s efforts to help you grow in relationship with Christ. All responses will be confidential, and the parish will only receive information about the community as a whole.

Please take the DMI survey starting February 18, 2026, by clicking on the following link:

https://portal.catholicleaders.org/dmi/survey/pd7198

  • Your input helps strengthen our parish.

  • Results help leadership prepare for the future.

  • A report of the findings will be shared in Summer 2026.

If you prefer a paper copy, you may pick up your survey after daily and Sunday Masses. They will be located at the back of each Church. To submit the completed paper survey, please drop it off in the container marked Completed DMI Surveys, also located at the back of each Church. (Your own church community may come up with an alternative means of distributing the paper copies.)

At Holy Apostles, we are blessed in so many ways. Together, we will identify our strengths and opportunities in greater detail as we strive to grow in missionary discipleship.

Please continue to pray for this intention and for the growth and protection of our parish.

THE PLACE OF SILENCE

by Fr. Ron Rolheiser o.m.i.

Many of us could use more silence in our lives. I say this cautiously because the place of silence in our lives isn’t easy to specify.

Silence is a complex; sometimes we fear it and try to avoid it and sometimes when we are tired and over-stimulated we positively long for it.

Generally, though, we have too little of it in our lives. Work, cellphones, conversation, entertainment, news, distraction, and preoccupations of every kind tend to fill up every waking minute. We have become so used to being stimulated by words, information, and distraction that we often feel lost and restless when we find ourselves alone, without someone to talk to, something to watch, something to read, or something to do to take up our attention.

Not all of this is bad, mind you. In the past, spiritual writers were generally too one-sided in extolling the virtues of silence. They tended to give the too simple impression that God and spiritual depth were only found in silence, as if the virtues of ordinary work, conversation, celebration, family, and community were somehow second-rate spiritually.

In speaking of the place of silence, former spiritualities generally penalized extroverts and let introverts off too easily. In brief, they didn’t sufficiently take into account that all of us, extroverts and introverts alike, need the therapy of a public life. While we need silence for depth, we need interaction with others for grounding and sanity. Certain inner work can only be done in silence, but a certain grounding of our sanity depends on interaction with others. Silence can also be an escape, an avoidance of the stinging purification that often can happen only through the challenge of interacting within a family and a community.

Moreover, silence is not always the best way to deal with heartaches and obsessions. Ultimately, this is a form of overconcentration. Sometimes when a heartache is threatening our sanity, the best thing we can do is not go to the chapel but rather to the theatre or to a meal with a friend. Preoccupation with work or a healthy distraction can sometimes be just the friend you need when your heart is fighting asphyxiation.

There’s a story about the famous philosopher Hegel. Immediately after finishing his monumental work on the phenomenology of history, he realized that he was on the edge of a major breakdown because of the intensity of his concentration over so long a period. What did he do to break out of this? Go on a silent retreat? No. He went to the opera every night, dined every day with friends, and sought out every kind of distraction until, after a while, the strangling grip of his inner world finally let go and the sunshine and freshness of everyday life broke through again. Sometimes distraction, not silence, is our best cure, even spiritually.

Still, there’s a need for silence. What the great spiritual writers of all ages tried to teach on this subject can perhaps be captured in a single line from Meister Eckhart: Nothing resembles the language of God as much as silence.

In essence, Eckhart is saying that silence is a privileged entry into the divine realm. There’s a huge silence inside each of us that beckons us into itself and can help us learn the language of heaven. What’s meant by this?

Silence is a language that’s deeper, more far-reaching, more understanding, more compassionate, and more eternal than any other language. In heaven, it seems, there will be no languages, no words. Silence will speak. We will wholly, intimately, and ecstatically understand each other and hold each other in silence. Ironically, for all their importance, words are part of the reason we can’t fully do this already. Words unite but they also divide. There’s a deeper connection available in silence.

Lovers already know this, as do the Quakers whose liturgy tries to imitate the silence of heaven, and as do those who practice contemplative prayer. John of the Cross expresses this in a wonderfully cryptic line: “Learn to understand more by not understanding than by understanding.”

Silence can speak louder than words, and more deeply. We experience this already in different ways: when we are separated by distance or death from loved ones, we can still be with them in silence; when we are divided from other sincere persons through misunderstanding, silence can provide the place where we can be together; when we stand helpless before another’s suffering, silence can be the best way of expressing our empathy; and when we have sinned and have no words to restore things to their previous wholeness, in silence a deeper word can speak and let us know that, in the end, all will be well and every manner of being will be well.

Nothing resembles the language of God as much as silence. It’s the language of heaven, already deep inside of us, beckoning us, inviting us into deeper intimacy with everything, even as we still need the therapy of a public life.

Coats for Kids 2025 Update

We are into our ninth year responding to the requests from the more
than two dozen schools and organizations within Holy Apostles Parish
which are the services of our Knights of Columbus Council. The schools are situated
throughout our Parish, and the school staff supply us with all the
needed information to make sure no child goes without a winter coat.
Each year, the need grows as new families arrive, situations change,

and, of course, the kids grow. In 2025, the Knights of Columbus were able to
purchase 30 boxes or 360 coats, valued at $11,430.
Through the support of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the
with the generosity of our Parish, a total of $9,737 was raised for the Kids for Coats
program.

The Knights of Columbus wish to thank everyone from the Parish for
their incredible generosity and support for the Coats for Kids program. The
Knights would also like to extend a special “Thank You” to Margaret Gillis
and her team for providing the 168 Girl and 192 Boy knitted hats that were
included with each of the coats. Thank you also to the SSVP for their help
with our efforts again this past year.

THANK YOU!

REFLECTION

When What is Precious is Taken from You

Perhaps the reality that is hardest of all to accept in life is the unalterable fact that everything that is precious to us will, in some way, eventually be taken away. Our kids grow up and leave home, friends move away, loved ones die, we lose our health, and eventually we die too.

Even what is precious to us in terms of our faith and values suffers in the same way: things change, thoughts and feelings shift, rock foundations that once anchored us unassailably give way, doubt creeps in, the bottom falls out, and we are left wondering what we really believe in and what really can be trusted.

However, everything we lose is eventually given back to us, and in a deeper way. Our kids become wonderful adults who begin to parent us, new bonds of friendship form across distance, we reconnect in a deeper and more permanent way to our loved ones who have died, we find something deeper and more permanent than physical health, death opens us up to the infinite, and the bottom falling out of old beliefs sends us free-falling to a place where we land on bedrock, on a foundation so secure that it can never be shaken again.

This is true even for what is most precious to us religiously – scripture, the creeds of our faith, the church itself, great saints, great moral mentors. In the end, they can be wonderful vehicles towards God, but they are icons. They aren’t God.

Icons help lead to God, idols help block access to God. An idol is simply an icon that has been held on to for too long. We are given certain things to hang onto for a time, a certain language, certain rituals, certain creeds and dogmas, a certain understanding of our faith, holy men and women as models, spiritual literature that nourishes us, and, not least, a certain inner sense of trust and security that all of this is good, is right, and is in some way God.

And this is good, for a while. But the day comes, usually occasioned by deep pain and loss, where the bottom falls out and we go into a free fall where, no matter what we try to grasp onto will not hold us until eventually we land on something solid, bedrock, God himself.

Youth Thinkfast

As part of the Social Justice component of the Confirmation program, our youth will be participating in a Thinkfast on February 7 in support of Development and Peace. Youth volunteers will be at the back of the church after the SMB 11:00 AM Mass on February 1 to collect donations. Thank you for your generosity and support!

WHAT: THINKfast is an interactive learning experience for youth who are passionate about social justice. Fasting is also a key part of the Catholic faith tradition and involves our whole bodies in prayer. It is a spiritual practice and a way to stand in solidarity with the hungry, poor, and oppressed.

WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 7 from 8am-4pm, SMB

WHO: Confirmation 1 students and teachers

HOW: Thinkfast participants are also seeking donations for Development and Peace. If you are able, please give! Students will be at Mass on Feb. 1, SMB asking for support.

The Ladies Guild at SMB

The Ladies Guild is an organization comprised of a small number of women from the Saint Marguerite Bourgeois site who organized to support one another, to grow in spirituality, to bear witness to the hospitality of the Lord and to share our gifts with the Parish through fellowship, hospitality and fundraising.

The Guild is a broad ministry whose primary function is hospitality. The Guild, with the generous assistance of the parishioners, provides hospitality to the following events: First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Funeral services, Missions, Mass of Remembrance, Stewardship Fair, World Day of Prayer, Saint Marguerite Breakfasts, and any other events as requested by the Parish.

The Guild holds an annual bake sale usually in November as its’ primary fundraiser. Through the years, the proceeds of our fundraising efforts have been used to support our Chalice Sponsor Child, provide materials for the Parish education program, make donations to the Saint Marguerite Centre for Women and the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

The Guild meets as a group on a semi-annual basis or as the need arises. We are a small group who are always looking for new members. Should you be interested in becoming a member, or would like to volunteer your talents as a baker/cook or your gift of time, we would be most appreciative. Please call the Parish office to leave a message for our President, Aline Bond or Vice-President, Lil Kenny.

The Ladies Guild at St. Augustine’s

The St. Augustine Church Women’s Guild is open to the women members of St. Augustine Church and has been in existence for more than 50 years. The Guild’s activities focus on three areas: the Church, the local community, and the community at large. Each year, we hold an annual fundraiser to help raise funds to complete our projects.

In support of the Church, we host after-Mass coffee/tea with baked goods four times a year, have purchased large fans to help circulate air within the church, and provide gifts for Sunday school students completing First Communion and Confirmation. We also offer donations to help cover costs for congregation members to attend events (such as Steubenville), prepare “goodie” baskets for seniors in our congregation three times a year, and provide chocolate to the congregation on occasions like Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, and Mother’s Day. In addition, we purchase items for use within the Church and the Glebe (for example, a Remembrance Book, albs, and household items).

Within the local community, we work with St. Vincent de Paul to assist individuals and families in need, and we host birthday parties for residents of Shoreham Long Term Care facility three times a year. We support a local family through monthly food bank deliveries and coordinate a summer food drive, and we liaise with the Salvation Army to provide Christmas gifts and a meal for two to three families. We also host or support the annual Women’s Day of Prayer alongside the other four local churches, and we host one of the five ecumenical services offered through a partnership among the five local churches.

In the broader community, we sponsor one child through Chalice and support the parish in the sponsorship of another, sponsor one family through the Save-A-Family program, and provide annual donations to Oskomi Mission and to Team Canada Healing Hands Deaf Education Team.

There are many other things we do, but it can be difficult to summarize our full history and activities without knowing exactly what information is needed. It would be easier to answer specific questions than to attempt a complete overview.

The Guild meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the basement of the St. Augustine Glebe House. Our next fundraiser is scheduled for February 21st from 4:00–6:00 p.m. and will be our Annual Spaghetti Take-Out.
